Yoshio Sakamoto and his legendary R&D1 team began the planning concepts in early 1990. Unfortunately the programming staff was booked on "more" important franchise titles at the time. Nintendo turned to satellite developer Intelligent Systems to provide assistance in the programming field to help R&D1 complete the title. A rather large team consisting of 14 R&D1 members (design-music), and 8 Intelligent System members (program), the team completed the title in 1993.
Super Metroid was eventually given "Player's Choice" status in North America for the Super Nintendo. Player's Choice titles are specially-priced million-selling games.
