The Nintendo DS is what Nintendo calls its "third pillar". It's not part of the Game Boy line nor part of its home console category but instead a completely new product that is attempting to expand the game-playing audience by focusing on innovation and games that appeal to non-gamers and gamers alike. The device features two screens capable of 3D graphics, one of which is touch-sensitive. The system also comes with a microphone and wireless multiplayer communication for up to 16 players. The Nintendo DS is currently facing stiff competition from the PlayStation Portable (PSP), Sony's first entry into the portable market. So far the system has been putting up a respectable fight, supported by a healthy market that craves both 2D and 3D games. The result is that developers have embraced the easier and cheaper to develop for Nintendo DS with innovative titles like Electroplankton, Nintendogs and Polarium. Furthermore, the Nintendo DS will introduce Nintendo's first worldwide network called the "Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection". The network will allow game players to play compatible games with others from around the world.
The Nintendo DS handheld and accessories contain model numbers beginning with the letters NTR and ending with a consecutive number system. NTR originates from the word "Nitro". Nitro was the codename of the Nintendo DS during its early days of development. Here you will find detailed information regarding all aspects of the Nintendo DS and its accessories.
