Game Boy
Hardware Profile

The Game Boy was an evolution of the Game & Watch handheld. It was conceived by legendary designer Gunpei Yokoi with the intention of providing the home experience of playing games to a portable device. Although the unit could only display four shades of green and had a blurry screen, it was groundbreaking for its time because it allowed games to be played on the go. Like any platform, it is nothing without software and Tetris was a landmark title for the device as well as a landmark discovery for the video game industry. Although Nintendo endured an epic adventure to acquire the rights to release the game on its handheld, it was completely worth it in the end. Like the NES before it, the Nintendo Game Boy established a billion dollar industry and created a revolution with its pick-up-and-play style of games. To bring this magic to the Super Nintendo home console, Nintendo later released a device called the Super Game Boy. The Super Game Boy cartridge, which contained a slot for Game Boy games, could be inserted into the Super Nintendo. It allowed players to enjoy their Game Boy games on a television. In some games, it would even improve the color and sound.

The Game Boy console and accessories contain model numbers beginning with the letters DMG and ending with a consecutive number system. DMG originates from the words "Dot Matrix Game". A dot matrix is an array of dots used to generate characters, symbols, and images -- an appropriate description for the dots used to create the Game Boy's graphics. Here you will find detailed information regarding all aspects of the Game Boy and its accessories.
