Since 1991, Charles Martinet has been the voice of Mario. Although, Mario didn't start talking in an actual video game until 1996. Before 1996, Martinet was the voice of Mario at tradeshows, sporting events and other Nintendo public performances. He performed "Mario in Real Time," an animation system that captured Martinet's head and facial movements while he talked, relaying them to a 3-D model of Mario's head. In 1996, Martinet's voice debuted in a Nintendo video game with the voice of Mario in Super Mario 64. Since then, he's done several additional voices for Nintendo characters such as Luigi, Wario, Baby Mario, and Waluigi.

Martinet was born in 1956 in San Jose, California. He attended the Drama School of London and apprenticed at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre. After performing in over 75 plays in nine years, he began to do voice acting, trade shows presentations, and auditions "for every film and television part that came to town." This ambition landed him parts in several TV shows, movies, and hundreds of corporate videos.
