Iwata was born in 1959 in the Hokkaido Prefecture of Japan. Iwata majored in Computer Science at the Tokyo Institute of Technology University. After graduating, Iwata joined HAL Laboratory Inc. In 1983, he began coordinating the software production and development of Nintendo titles, including the Kirby series. In 1993, he was named president and executive adviser of HAL Laboratory.
In 2000, Iwata moved to Nintendo Co., Ltd. as the head of its Corporate Planning Division. His responsibilty centered around Nintendo's global corporate planning. In 2002, Iwata replaced Hiroshi Yamauchi as president of Nintendo Co., Ltd.
